Calgary, AB – Alberta is about to get a double shot of brass, jazz, funk and pop music with Delirium Street Party Brass and Ali Wick, on tour in late April/early May in support of their debut EP’s!

DELIRIUM STREET PARTY BRASS
Delirium Street Party Brass is a groundbreaking ensemble from Calgary, AB that is steadily building a reputation as one of the premiere brass bands in Canada. The group blends jazz elements from the New Orleans street band tradition with pop stylings, using its unique, percussion-and-horns-centered instrumentation to deliver a new take on the growing brass band genre.
DSPB features a diverse mix of the top jazz, soul, funk and pop musicians in Calgary, who represent three generations of professional musicians that all share a love for large ensemble energy and improvisation. The band’s lead singer Ali Wick is a powerhouse of pop with a unique style that blends numerous genres, while taking this diverse genre to a youth-based audience.
DSPB’s debut The Alberta Sessions EP is a reimagining of songs hand-selected by the Producers from the catalogue of our great legends of song in Alberta. The process of song selection was very thorough and without even trying, ended up producing 6 songs that are all penned by female, Alberta-born artists. Songs by Joni Mitchell, Kiesza, Jocelyn Alice, our own Ali Wick, Tegan and Sara, and Feist comprise this very special EP.
The EP was produced by 3-Time Juno Award winning Producer Scott Morin and DSPB band-leader John Abraham, with songs recorded and mixed at OCL Studios by Brennan Kennedy. The end result is an album that reinvents some of the classic songs from 6 of Alberta’s greatest songwriters through the lens of 12 uniquely talented jazz, pop and soulful musicians on the EP. For the upcoming Alberta-wide tour to launch this EP, Delirium Street Party Brass will be touring as a scaled down but still-meaty-8-piece-ensemble, filling each venue with their trademark brass band sound.

ALI WICK

Ali Wick is not only the lead singer and front-woman of DSPB, but a deeply talented singer, songwriter and recording artist in her own right. This tour will feature Ali performing her own special set of original songs, in addition to her role as singer in Delirium Street Party Brass. Ali will be performing a repertoire of new originals in support of her upcoming EP release which was recorded in Nashville, Calgary and Toronto and sees this raw, soulful and emotional artist step out with a set of autobiographical songs that relates deeply to a wide range of music fans.

Our EP celebrates the songwriting of Alberta female artists in the brass band genre, featuring the amazing Ali Wick. What a better celebration of Alberta music than a song from Calgary's hometown girl Feist. We love the bouncy feel of this one, and Allistair Elliott's "Sgt Pepper" style piccolo trumpet at the end, and John Abraham's understated trombone solo. The post-teen melancholy in the lyrics is quite seductive. Hope you LOVE IT.

JONI MITCHELL’S 80TH WITH BRASS BAND ARRANGEMENT OF “BIG YELLOW TAXI”

06 NOVEMBER 2023 (Calgary, AB) – Delirium Street Party Brass, Calgary’s #1 brass and percussion ensemble, has released their new single for "Big Yellow Taxi" off of their upcoming debut EP The Alberta Sessions.

“Big Yellow Taxi” is the second single from the EP, which will be released on Tuesday, November 7 th - the same day as the legendary singer/songwriter and icon Joni Mitchell’s 80th birthday. “We are so lucky to be able to have this band of a dozen of Calgary’s greatest musicians, and to celebrate the greatest genius to ever come out of Alberta on her 80th birthday is a major honour”, said co-Producer Scott Morin.

Although widely discussed as being from Saskatchewan, Joni Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod, AB on November 7th, 1943. Her storied history as one of the great poets, songwriters, painters, vocalists and guitarists is widely celebrated, and this composition is perhaps her best known in an unbelievable catalogue of classic songs. “Big Yellow Taxi” is known for its environmental concern and is the #9 song on CBC’s list of ‘Top 50 Essential Canadian tracks.’

The arrangement of the song by Calgarian bassist Jeremy Coates, vocal performance from local singer Ali Wick, and production by band leader John Abraham and 3-Time Juno Winner Scott Morin was a true labour of love, that took place at OCL Studios in Chestermere, AB. The opportunity to record this song in the prairies, where Joni grew up, added to the inspiration behind the recording.

Delirium Street Party Brass is a unique ensemble of jazz, funk, soul and pop musicians who are driven to bring a new take on the classic New Orleans brass band sound. Featuring three generations of musicians led by a dynamic and diverse young vocalist, the band represents a refreshing take that is focussed on bringing the brass band esthetic to a wide audience.

“Big Yellow Taxi” is the follow up to DSPB’s debut single, an arrangement of Kiesza’s hit “Hideaway”, and is the second single from their debut EP “The Alberta Sessions” which will be released in April 2024. The EP features new arrangements in the brass band tradition of songs by Joni Mitchell, Kiesza, Feist, Ali Wick, Jocelyn Alice, and Tegan and Sara. All singles will be released over the next 6 months, followed by a Western Canadian tour from the group.

Come to Inglewood on Sunday for the pedestrian street celebration. We're performing in front of Spolumbo's at 2PM and 3PM. We're playing songs from our upcoming "The Alberta Sessions EP" in a true "street band" format. We are also leading a procession New Orlean's style to celebrate and honour musicians lost in 2023, including Marvin Kee, Ian Tyson, Stacie Lynn Roper, Dan McKinnon, Andy Sparacino and Dean Clarke. Bring your instrument or your voice as we'll be handing out some sheet music so you can join us.

We love street party brass music, we love NOLA-style music, and we loved so many of these recently departed musicians. It's going to be great to honour them in a celebration of music and their lives. And, we'll be honouring living Alberta female songwriters too, with some of our other songs.

The street party is from 11:30 AM to 5:00PM.

But, stay after! Our friends The Brass Tactics are playing Ironwood in the evening!

PS Someone tagged the Brass Tactic's show with "Alberta's Best Brass Band". Ha Ha. Maybe there will be a throw-down like back in the days of Kid Ory and Buddy Bolden! We're having a double-single release party by Delirium Street Party Brass with special guests l'Omelette. Delirium releases their "Hideaway" single, the first of their "Alberta Sessions" song project with Modern Brass Band interpretations of female Alberta Songwriters. We love the original by Kiesza! Eclectic art rock outfit L'omlette releases their single "Cool".

These two bands are reinventing modern music. L'omelette has proudly evaded description since their inception in 2017, blending music and visuals with vibrant, heady beats. Delirium Street Party Brass has been pushing the "modern brass" nascent genre, focusing on blending jazz interpretations from New Orleans street bands while making modern pop beats better with percussion and horns.

Apollo Suns are a band with incredible live performance experience and a fearless drive that has led to them creating a deep connection with the hearts of music fans all over Canada. A band that has toured Canada numerous times and has topped the Earshot! National radio charts, they are one of the more engaging live groups in the country and are guaranteed to throw a party in every town they hit.
Delirium Street Party Brass was formed in Calgary in 2012 and was initially inspired by the evolving ‘riot jazz’ brass bands (ie: The Soul Rebels, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Youngblood Brass Band) of the U.S. The band has artfully pushed the brass band genre further into ska, punk, jazz and party rock, focusing on high-energy music along with deep musicianship, tons of brass and percussion and strong female vocals.

Two brass-rock songs raising awareness will be available on World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2020

Calgary — October 2, 2020 —Delirium Street Party Brass releases “Mental Health Double Header”, available on all platforms on World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2020. The band is a unique concept horn-focused rock band, formed in 2012, using drums, trombones, trumpets, tuba, saxophones and even flutes to deliver a full energetic sound that is at-home on rock and pop stations and playlists.
Basket Case
“Basket Case” is a cover of Green Day’s iconic single, sung by Collen Middleton of Bent Roads Tavern. “I was leading The Raw Punk Green Day Tribute Project in 2019, ‘Bleeds Green’, and we shared a stage with Delirium Street Party Brass a few times” says Collen. “I wanted to collaborate as soon as I heard them — their instrumentation is so rare and they sound fantastic, breathing street brass life into pop music.” “Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day wrote the song about struggles with anxiety, before he was diagnosed with panic disorder” says John Abraham, band leader, recording engineer, producer and trombone player.
What The Dark Is Bringing
Composer and vocalist Ian Van der Wee says “I wrote ‘What The Dark Is Bringing’ about an episode I had with suicidal thoughts. What I went through at the time was extremely scary, and sharing that fear and imagery through song has helped me cope. I want people to be moved by the song, but I also hope other people going through a similar episode might recognize some elements and understand that they can get through it and emerge safely on the other side.”
Cover Art
Artist Klrissa Wright drew the cover art for the album. “I wanted to show the notion that our head and our thoughts are not always under our control”, she says. “Everyone sees something a little different in Klrissa’s art” says Abraham, “it seems to act as a mirror to one’s own experience.”

We are proud to release our new single "Stroke Therapy" recorded at The Beach Audio by the students at the The Academy of Production and Recording Arts.

Stroke Therapy is not about self pleasure. It is about musicians coming together to have a good time. Delirium Street Party Brass suffered a major blow in 2017 when our lead singer suffered a stroke. While awaiting her recovery and return to the band, we focused on enjoying our musical journey together, and sharing the brass horn band love with more musicians in jams, while building the band into something bigger and better. This anthem starts slow with the tuba and builds in layers with different horn solos and increasing drum lines. As it reaches its first climax it drops through a high, bright, loud and clear trumpet solo, then back in the pleasurable layers of jam mental relaxation, before the happy ending back with the brightness of the trumpet.

Our instrumental horn jam single in a 70's jazz funk tradition, our anthem to living life to its fullest and appreciating what you can get or give in the moment.

Delirium Street Party Brass is a ground-breaking brass band from Calgary formed in 2012 to apply New Orleans party Brass Band instrumentation (e.g. “The Soul Rebels”) to pop, rock and ska music (e.g. “No Doubt”), with a street-style performance vibe. The band evolved its sound, arrangements, and membership eventually coalescing around Margo Laing’s vocal performances. This album celebrates Margo’s influence on the band from 2015 until 2017 when she suffered a stroke, from which she is still recovering.

Get some sleep and mark your calendars, we’ll be going to Rockin4Dollars at Broken City on Wednesday. We’ve changed up the horns a bit for this show. Please come out and support the band. It’s a great opportunity to support and discover Calgary live music and up-and-coming bands.

Rocking4Dollars is a full band open mic, each band plays for 15 minutes, doors at 8:30PM, music usually goes until after midnight. At the end of the night, the bands spin a wheel for prizes.

Calgary, today at 5:30 PM we’re going to try out our brand new busking license and The City’s brand new busking regulations.

Catch a couple of songs at the Centre Street LRT sometime shortly after 5PM, we’ll assemble and warm up there. Then, we’ll claim one of the four "Busk Stops" on Stephen Avenue, set up the amp for Margo, and entertain you with some great brass-rock songs. Ask about our new Mr Doubler to throw out the bass. And Ron has some fun drum tricks up his sleeve.

Busy at 5:30PM? No problem! We’re invited to Rocking4Dollars at Broken City. $3 cover! 10 bands, each plays 3 songs. Then we get to spin the wheel for prizes! Loads of fun, and a great way to drink beer and meet people. Starts at 8PM.

John from Delirium is helping to organize the series. Many Thursdays this summer feature different music genres, and people are coming out with their family, their kids, their parents, their sweetie, their dog, and/or their dancing shoes. On August 27 come out and catch Brass and Funk.

Friday’s show is a private show for the clients of the Drop In Centre. We are donating our music and reports are it’s a lot of fun. Even though it’s a private show, we can add you to the guest list. Saturday’s show is at the Rosedale Hall from 7:00PM to 10:00PM. Tickets from kathymacd@gmail.com. The $30 price includes your meal (at 7:30), one drink, and the music. It’s a silent auction fundraiser for the Rosedale Tennis Club, and you will be hard pressed to find a better bunch of guys than the people in the Rosedale Tennis Club.

Stephen Love, a film student who we know and love, hung out with us this summer and filmed many of our fun adventures, in Chinatown, at the Peace Bridge, at the Stampede Hangover Picnic, in the Bow River, and on 17th Avenue in the rain. He edited into a great compilation of us having fun playing outdoors in Calgary.

September 26 and 27 is a big weekend. First we play the Drop In Centre at the ArtBeat Stage. This is a free show primarily for the clients and staff of the Drop In centre, to bring music to people who might not otherwise get out to hear live music. It should be a big enthusiastic crowd and it would be great if you could come, even if you’re lucky enough to not need the services of the Drop in Centre.

The next day we play the Rosedale Tennis Clubs "Light It Up" fundraising gala. There will be great tennis, dinner and a drink, and some outdoor and indoor music, for $30. We plan to mix it up with some traditional New Orleans in the late afternoon, and revert to our pop/rock dance in the evening.

In the meantime, next week we will play a busking show Aug 20 in Kensington, weather permitting. Hope you can come out, this will be Michael’s last show of the summer before he takes off back to Berklee School of Music in the fall. Watch twitter for last minute info.

AND AND AND AND our video will be dropping soon. It’s got a lot of great outdoor footage, really showing off our fine city and the fun we’ve had all summer. We can’t wait!

Last night we waded across treacherous waters near Prince’s Island, then played along with our recording of Believe In You, which was on infinite loop on the amp. Meanwhile, Stephen shot video from the Peace Bridge. We gathered quite a crowd on the bridge and on the shore! When we couldn’t stand Believe In You anymore, we had an audience member stop the iPod, then we played Sweet Dreams and Thrift Shop from our little island stage. Stephen captured Sweet Dreams and put it on the Youtubes:

and finished the night on The Yardhouse patio. What a great night! Thank you to the hundreds who stopped, watched, and applauded!

On July 29 we’re going to shoot some video. We’re going to “play along” with our Believe In You, starting at the Peace Bridge, then move on to a few other locations. Eventually, we may end up in Kensington again at the Container Bar.

We’re looking for some extras for background in the video! It’s a love song, so if you have someone you love (not necessarily romantically), bring them along, you can hold hands or sit close to each other.

Thanks to Open Streets Calgary we’ll be hitting the bicycle-powered stage again at Inglewood Sunfest. Sunfest is noon to 5PM on August 2nd, we’ll be performing at 4PM. Please come out and hear us! We had so much fun at the Stampede Hangover Picnic the last time we partnered with Open Streets Calgary, we can’t wait to do it again!

Volunteers needed for Stampede Hangover Picnic

One thousand postcard-size flyers showed up, if you can distribute some to friends, family, or nearby businesses, let us know and we’ll drop some off.

We also need:

* bouncers (just hang around and look official, mostly, as the band will collect the cover charge)

* merch people (sell CDs and stuff)

* compost and recycling diverters (hang out by the waste recycling bins and help people decide where to put their stuff.)

Watch the show page or twitter feed for last minute busking announcements this week, we may be out on the 9th, and probably be out near the LBO on the 11th and the 13th. Cowboy boots, big belt buckles, and cowboy hats encouraged. We may even play 2 country toons if you ask nice!

We are calling for volunteers for the Stampede Hangover Picnic! on July 15 with the visiting Lemon Bucket Orkestra. Positions needed:

1) Cover charge collector

2) Merch girl or Merch boy (all ages)

3) Promo help, we’ve ordered 1000 postcard size announcements. If you can drop some off with your friends, contact us and we’ll set you up.

If you love Stampede, party hard, so you’re ready for the hangover picnic. If you hate Stampede, this is the thing you need on your calendar to keep you sane over the next week.

AND WE WILL HAVE OUR CD for SALE. Bring money for the bands, and an extra $5 for the CD. If you can’t make it to the Hangover Picnic, we can mail you out the CD for an extra $2 shipping, just contact us.

We are playing Canada Day in Chinatown. Thanks to the Calgary Chinatown community for inviting us. We are at the corner of 3rd Ave and 1St SE at 7PM.

We will have our first CD for sale. If you want one, bring $5.
If you want the very first one, labeled “the very first CD” in sharpie and signed by us, bring $50.

Sharing the Gazebo with the Street People

On Friday, as promised, we hit 17th Avenue to play some music. It was raining pretty hard, so all the people who had indoor places to take shelter were missing. However, there were some street people taking shelter in the Gazebo. They really seemed to like the music, and took the dancing pretty seriously!

There are a lot of fun things coming up on the Delirium SPB schedule!.

Most importantly, the amazing Lemon Bucket Orkestra are coming to Calgary! We have a show scheduled with them on July 15. It will be an outdoor show, a Stampede Hangover Picnic. There will be bicycles, a parade, dancing, etc. etc. etc. Save the date July 15 and watch this space for details! This will be a pay-what-you-can event, not a free event, to support the 16 piece LBO on their Canada Tour.

Ski season over, busking starts Sunday

Ski season ended on Monday, which means Busking season is back. And Michael is back for our drums.

We’ll return triumphantly to Eau Claire (the circle amphitheatre by the windmill) on Sunday May 25, around 3PM. (If there’s some other event going on there, check the Peace Bridge just a few blocks West.)

Please share the word about the Feb 22nd show at Dickens Pub. Dope Soda is coming to town, they formed an Island based ska-reggae-hip-hop-jazz band by stealing musicians from some top Vancouver Island bands. “Led by a three piece horn section” and “ jumps back and forth between reggae jams, punk rock assaults, happy ska romps, and hiphop throwdowns”. Surely an event not to be missed!

We’re also playing, of course, along with Hats and Black Ties, and Class Action. These two bands are the mainstay of ska in Calgary. It’s worth coming out just for them!

Do you have a hall, garage, studio or warehouse?

We’re looking for a new rehearsal space, for cheap or free. We’ve been rehearsing Tuesday nights in a warehouse, but the warehouse is disappearing. We would prefer 7:30PM but could start as late as 9PM. Delirium is a street band, so we don’t need equipment (but if you’ve got a full recording studio with back line sitting empty, sure!). It should be heated, and quiet in case we record a CD or something, and big enough for all 9 of us. If you can help out, even temporarily, let us know in the comments below or contact us.

After a field trip to Banff to hear the Hot 8 Brass Band we are back at rehearsing and polishing.

Looking for a local band to share the stage with us, thinking some sort of duo to compensate for our large size, but they can’t be some mellow folky jazzy airy fairy duo. Something with some edge and, of course, talent. If you know of anyone let us know!

Also commissioning some third-party arrangements from talented Calgary individuals, and working on a few extended wank improvs in case people want us to play on and on and on through the night… “Three chords three minutes” is a guideline, not a rule!

We did some recordings this week! Sean and Margo’s 4track Zoom recorder, plus another couple of tracks on the computer. Left out the bass drum, tuba and vocals. We’re a 9 piece band, that means everyone recorded had their own mic. Gotta record the remaining three. Hope to have some samples on the website soon, then some gigs!
